In short

What Rispri supplies to pharma manufacturers.

Quick answer

Rispri Labs is a pharma intermediates supplier in India that sources and trades three groups of products: process intermediates (building blocks for generic APIs such as imatinib, nilotinib, osimertinib, sitagliptin and vilanterol, each identified by CAS number), Carbomer 940 and Carbomer 980 (cross-linked polyacrylic acid thickeners for gels, creams and ointments) and bulk APIs available on enquiry. Products come from GMP-compliant partner manufacturers; we do not synthesise them in house. The standard minimum order for a listed intermediate is 10 kg, and the certificate of analysis, technical data sheet, MSDS and any available DMF or CEP status are shared before you confirm the order.

The basics

Intermediates, KSMs, APIs and excipients: what each one is.

A medicine starts as a chain of chemical steps. The key starting material (KSM) is the first significant building block that becomes part of the final drug molecule. Each compound made along the route after that is a pharmaceutical intermediate. The last step gives the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), the substance that has the therapeutic effect. A formulator then mixes the API with excipients, the inactive ingredients that turn it into a tablet, capsule, gel or injection.

When you buy an intermediate, the CAS number matters more than the name. The same compound can be written several ways (for example "4-Chloro-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl isocyanate" is one building block shared by sorafenib and regorafenib routes), and a CAS Registry Number is a unique identifier that removes the guesswork. That is why every product on this page is listed with its CAS number.

Why a second source matters now

Indian formulators still import most of their APIs and key starting materials from a single country. According to published estimates, about 70% of India's API imports come from China, and API and bulk drug imports were about ₹37,722 crore in 2023-24. The government's production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for bulk drugs covers 41 products, and 26 APIs, KSMs and intermediates are now made in India under it (source: Policy Circle, India's API dependence). Price swings and supply shocks have shown the cost of one-source risk. A second, well documented source protects your production plan.

Where Rispri fits

Alongside our environmental laboratory and water treatment businesses, Rispri Labs connects generic API manufacturers, CDMOs and formulation houses with a vetted network of manufacturing partners. We qualify more than one manufacturer for each building block where we can, collect the documents, and handle the commercial side so your purchase team deals with one accountable supplier.

Specialty excipients

Carbomer 940 and Carbomer 980 rheology modifiers.

Carbomers are high molecular weight, cross-linked polyacrylic acid polymers. As supplied they are acidic, fluffy white powders; when dispersed in water and neutralised with a base, the polymer chains uncoil and swell, turning the liquid into a clear, thick gel. They are used as thickeners, suspending agents and stabilisers in pharmaceutical gels, oral care and personal care products.

Typical specifications as published for our grades. The certificate of analysis for each lot is the binding document.

Carbomer 940

High viscosity, sparkling clear gels

An efficient rheology modifier that gives high viscosity and forms sparkling clear water or hydroalcoholic gels and creams. It is a proven thickener and stabiliser across personal care and pharmaceutical formulations.

Carbomer 980

Higher clarity, finer viscosity control

A synthetic, cross-linked polyacrylate polymer, made by a benzene-free process, offering higher clarity and finer viscosity control than 940. Typical applications: hair styling gel, hydro-alcoholic gel, moisturising cream, sunscreen lotion, toothpaste, shampoo, pharma gels and ointments, and skin fresheners.

How to get a clear carbomer gel

  1. Disperse slowly. Sift the powder into the vortex of well-stirred water. Dumping it in forms lumps ("fish eyes") with dry powder trapped inside.
  2. Let it wet out. Allow the dispersion to hydrate fully before neutralising; it will look cloudy and thin at this stage.
  3. Neutralise. Add a base such as sodium hydroxide or triethanolamine while stirring gently. Viscosity rises sharply as the pH moves towards neutral.
  4. Avoid air. Mix slowly after neutralising to keep bubbles out of a clear gel.

Quality and regulation

The rules your auditors check.

Pharmaceutical quality in India rests on the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and its rules, administered by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and state drug controllers. Good manufacturing practice is set out in Schedule M, which was revised in 2023 to bring it closer to WHO GMP. For APIs, the international reference is ICH Q7, the GMP guide for active pharmaceutical ingredients, which applies from the point where the API starting material enters the process.

That is why the source of an intermediate matters. If a building block is used after the API starting material, its manufacture falls inside your GMP story, and your auditors will want to see that the supplier is qualified, that specifications are agreed and that changes are notified.

Sourcing risks

Common sourcing problems, and how we reduce them.

  1. 01
    The problem

One supplier and one country for a critical molecule.

    What we do

We qualify more than one manufacturer for each building block, so a shutdown at one source does not stop your line.

  2. 02
    The problem

Documents arrive late or are incomplete.

    What we do

COA, TDS and regulatory status are shared before the order, not after the goods arrive.

  3. 03
    The problem

Quality varies from lot to lot.

    What we do

Pre-shipment checks against the agreed specification, and our own laboratory testing on request.

  4. 04
    The problem

Development needs small lots, production needs scale.

    What we do

Flexible lot sizes from sample quantities to regular supply from the same qualified source.

  5. 05
    The problem

Names on the purchase order do not match the supplier's label.

    What we do

Every line is quoted and invoiced against its CAS number, so there is no doubt about what is being supplied.

Buying guide

What to ask any intermediates supplier.

Use this list with any supplier, including us.

  • Is the CAS number on the quote and the invoice? It is the only unambiguous identity check.
  • Can I see the COA before I order? Ideally a recent batch COA against the specification you will buy to.
  • Who actually makes it? A trader should tell you whether the manufacturer is GMP-compliant and whether it can be audited.
  • Is there a DMF or CEP? Needed if your product is filed in regulated markets.
  • What happens if the route or site changes? Ask for change notification in writing.
  • Can I get a sample from the same source as the commercial lot? Otherwise your qualification work may not hold.
  • How is it packed and shipped? Especially for isocyanates, chloroformates and toxic reagents.
  • Is there a second source? One plant is one point of failure.

Questions

Pharma intermediates FAQs.

What is a pharmaceutical intermediate?

A pharmaceutical intermediate is a compound made during the synthesis of an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) that is converted further before it becomes the final API. Intermediates sit between the key starting material and the finished API in the synthetic route.

Why do you list products by CAS number?

A CAS Registry Number is a unique identifier for a chemical substance. Long chemical names can be written in several ways, so quoting and invoicing against the CAS number makes sure you get exactly the compound you asked for.

What is the minimum order quantity?

The standard minimum order for a listed process intermediate is 10 kg. Larger volumes, custom-route intermediates and bulk API lots are quoted per enquiry.

Can I get a sample before ordering?

Yes. We supply from sample quantities for development up to regular production supply. Tell us the quantity your R&D or QA needs to qualify the material.

Which documents do you provide?

A certificate of analysis (COA), technical data sheet (TDS) and material safety data sheet (MSDS) are available for all products, along with DMF or CEP status where applicable. They are shared before order confirmation.

Do you manufacture these intermediates yourselves?

No. Rispri Labs sources intermediates and APIs from GMP-compliant manufacturers in a vetted partner network. We handle qualification of sources, documents, pre-shipment checks and supply.

Do you supply Carbomer 940?

Yes. We supply Carbomer 940 (polyacrylic acid, CAS 9003-01-4, HSN 39069090), with a typical viscosity of 40,000 to 60,000 cPs at 0.5% w/v. The TDS and MSDS can be downloaded from this page.

What is the difference between Carbomer 940 and Carbomer 980?

Both are cross-linked polyacrylic acid polymers with similar viscosity. Carbomer 980 is made by a benzene-free process and gives higher clarity and finer viscosity control, with clarity of at least 90% at 0.5% w/v, which suits clear gels and pharma ointments.

What are carbomers used for?

Carbomers are used as thickeners, suspending agents and stabilisers. Typical uses include pharmaceutical gels and ointments, hydro-alcoholic gels, creams, sunscreens, toothpaste, shampoo and hair styling gels.

Which APIs can you supply?

We list 20 bulk APIs available on enquiry, including Darunavir, Entecavir USP, Mycophenolate Mofetil USP, Teriflunomide and Dexmedetomidine Hydrochloride USP. Availability, batch documents and lot size are confirmed when you enquire.

Which pharmacopoeia grades do you supply?

IP, BP, USP and EP grades are supplied as specified, depending on the product and source. State the grade you need in your enquiry so that the COA is issued against the right monograph.

How is the material packed?

Packing depends on the product and quantity and is confirmed with the quotation. Reactive or toxic materials such as isocyanates, chloroformates and cyanogen bromide are packed and transported according to their MSDS and transport classification.
