How Much Does an ETP Cost in India? A 2026 Pricing Guide

Realistic price ranges by capacity, why the per-litre cost falls as plants get bigger, and the factors that actually move a quote up or down.

There's no single honest answer to "what does an ETP cost" — it depends heavily on capacity, wastewater characteristics, and how strict your discharge standard is. But there are real, quotable ranges, and understanding why they vary this much makes it much easier to sanity-check a vendor's proposal.

Price by capacity band

Industry pricing guides put the overall range at roughly ₹60,000 to ₹2,00,000 per KLD (kilolitres per day of capacity), depending on treatment complexity, automation level, and discharge norms. Broken down by typical project size:

  • Small industrial ETPs (50–200 KLD): roughly ₹15–60 lakhs
  • A basic 50 KLD biological system: around ₹20 lakh
  • A fully automated 1 MLD (1,000 KLD) plant: can run ₹8 crore or more
₹18,000–30,000/KLD typical per-KLD cost for a 50 KLD plant, versus ₹10,000–16,000/KLD for a 500 KLD plant — smaller plants cost significantly more per unit of capacity

Why smaller plants cost more per KLD

This is simple economy of scale, but it surprises people budgeting for the first time: a lot of an ETP's cost is fixed — civil work, basic automation, a minimum viable set of treatment stages — regardless of whether you're treating 50 KLD or 500 KLD. Spread that fixed cost over more capacity and the per-KLD price drops. If you're comparing quotes across plants of different sizes, compare total project cost against your actual requirement, not just the headline per-KLD number.

What actually moves a quote up or down

  • Wastewater characteristics. High COD, BOD, TDS, oil & grease, or toxicity all mean more treatment stages and higher cost.
  • Required outlet quality. Meeting general CPCB standards costs less than meeting stricter state-specific limits — and meeting a ZLD mandate costs substantially more than either.
  • Technology and automation level. Manual-monitoring systems cost less upfront than fully automated, OCEMS-integrated plants — but automation reduces ongoing labour cost and compliance risk.

Quoted price ranges vary noticeably between sources, largely because they don't all include the same scope — some cover equipment only, others include civil work, automation, and commissioning. Treat any single number as a starting estimate, not a final figure, until you've confirmed exactly what's included.

Frequently asked questions

Does the ETP cost include ongoing operating expenses?

No — the ranges above are capital cost only. Ongoing costs (chemicals, energy, sludge disposal, OCEMS calibration, staffing) are separate and recurring, and should be budgeted independently of the upfront plant cost.

Is a cheaper quote always a worse plant?

Not necessarily, but it's worth understanding why a quote is cheaper — reduced scope, simpler technology, or less automation are all legitimate reasons, but so is under-specifying the plant for your actual wastewater load, which costs more to fix later than it saves upfront.

How much more does a ZLD-compliant ETP cost versus a standard one?

Meaningfully more — ZLD requires additional stages (evaporators, crystallizers) beyond a standard ETP's treatment train, and those stages are both capital- and energy-intensive. If ZLD applies to your sector and location, budget for it as a distinct requirement, not a minor add-on to a standard ETP quote.
